June is National Safety Month, and SoCalGas is using this period to inform customers about protecting themselves from imposters and scams, both in-person and online.

Scammers often pose as utility workers or create websites that mimic SoCalGas’ bill payment webpage. “We have tips available to help you protect yourself,” a company representative stated.

In-person imposters attempt to gain access to homes by posing as utility workers, sometimes wearing hard hats or reflective vests. “SoCalGas encourages customers to be aware of these scams and to question anyone who presents themselves as a representative of SoCalGas,” the representative added. Customers should consider the following:

– Typically, SoCalGas visits are in response to specific service requests. If unexpected, call before allowing entry.
– Occasionally, maintenance or safety inspections require employee access.
– Authorized employees drive company vehicles and wear uniforms with the company logo.
– All employees carry a photo ID badge; always ask for identification.
– Employees will never request payments during home visits.

To verify authenticity, customers can ask for identification or call 1-800-427-2200 (or 1-800-342-4545 for Spanish-language service).

Online search engine scams occur when unofficial websites appear at the top of search results. These sites may take payments or provide phone numbers where personal information is requested fraudulently. To avoid such scams:

– Use official payment methods listed on the Ways to Pay webpage or printed bills.
– Save contact information in your phone.
– Remember that SoCalGas will never ask for credit card or banking information over the phone.

National Safety Month aims to enhance safety awareness from workplaces to homes and online. “SoCalGas is dedicated to the safety of its customers and employees,” the representative concluded. For more information on scam protection, visit socalgas.com/ScamAlert.
