The Central Homicide Unit of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department recently declared a murder-suicide to be behind the deaths of an elderly couple from La Quinta.

The couple was reported missing and later found deceased in their car, according to a July 20 Riverside County Sheriff’s Office press release.

La Quinta deputies responded to the La Quinta Senior Living Facility July 14 after receiving a report of a missing married couple, Deputy Sgt. Steve Brosche, stated in the release.

Michael Herbst, 87, and Lisa Herbst, 87, had not returned to the facility the night before, according to the release. Deputies located the couple deceased in their vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds, at the end of Coyote Song Way, in the county area of Palm Desert.

The incident is under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident can contact Investigator Gonzalez with the Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-2777.
