A bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert (R-California) to rename the Norco (California) Post Office to Marine Lance Corporal Kareem Nikoui Memorial Post Office has passed the House and Senate and is headed to President Biden for signature.
H.R. 5809 will designate the U.S. Postal Service facility at 1801 Town and Country Drive in honor of Nikoui, a Norco resident, who was killed during the Kabul terror attack on Aug. 26, 2021 while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, a press release said.
“The United States Congress has now acted to honor and recognize the extraordinary sacrifice of Lance Corporal Kareem Nikoui,” Calvert said in the release. “Lance Corporal Nikoui has been gone for more than a year now, but we still remember, we still grieve and we still celebrate the incredible impact he made. With the Norco Post Office named in his honor, we will forever pay tribute to a true Norco hero. I appreciate my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, in both the House and Senate, supporting my legislation and look forward to it becoming law in the coming days.”
Nikoui is a 2019 graduate of Norco High School. Joining the Marine Corps, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines unit at Camp Pendleton in South California. As a unit member, Nikoui was deployed to Afghanistan where he helped “evacuate U.S. citizens, American allies, Afghan partners and others at-risk” as part of the Operation Allies Refuge. He was one of 13 American servicemembers killed while serving at Kabul airport’s Abbey Gate when an ISIS-K terrorist detonated a suicide bomb.
Calvert, one of the longest-serving members of Congress, represents California’s 42nd Congressional District. He is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent California’s 41st congressional district, Ballotpedia said.
Calvert won the primary on June 7. (California State Sen. Melissa Melendez (R-Lake Elsinore), who joined the election run in March, didn’t appear on the primary ballot). Calvert is on the ballot against Democrat Will Rollins for the general election to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8, Ballotpedia said.
