The Palm Springs International Film Society will honor Irish actor Colin Farrell with the Desert Palm Achievement Acting Award this January during its multi-day Film Awards ceremony.

Though he has stood out in numerous performances over the years, Farrell's latest role in the comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin" is what earned him the award, Festival Chairman Harold Matzner said in a news release.

“Colin Farrell reunites with Brendan Gleeson and director Martin McDonagh in the masterful comedy 'The Banshees of Inisherin'," Matzner said. "Farrell gives a memorable performance as Pádraic a sweet-souled Irish farmer trying to save his lifelong friend. For this career-best performance, we are honored to present the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor to Colin Farrell.”

"The Banshees of Inisherin" takes place on a remote island off of the coast of Ireland and follows lifelong friends Pádraic (Farrell) and Colm (Gleeson). The two find themselves at an impasse when Colm decides to sever their friendship. Pádraic, with aid from his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and troubled islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), works to repair the relationship despite Colm's resolve.

Farrell has been acting for 20-plus years in both film and television. In addition to this latest award, Farrell won a Golden Globe in 2009 for his role in "In Bruges". Farrell also was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes for his role in the film "The Lobster". That performance also garnered a nomination for Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards and Best European Actor at the European Film Awards.

Farrell's versatility as an actor also can be seen in his diverse roles, including "Dumbo", "Widows", "The Killing of a Sacred Deer", "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", "The Way Back Home" and "Miami Vice".

The Palm Springs International Film Society award ceremony will take place in person on Jan. 5 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The festival will run multiple days through Jan. 16. American Express will present the event, which is sponsored by "Entertainment Tonight" and IHG Hotels & Resorts.
