From December 29, 2022 through August 31, 2023 a short section of Avenue 40 between Andrews Court and intersection of Avenue 40 and Jefferson Street in North Indio will be closed as a Coachella Valley Water District’s contractor continues work on a project to bring flood relief to the area.
Signs will redirect drivers around the closed section on Avenue 40. See detour map here. Each detour has two alternatives below.
Detours available to westbound drivers on Avenue 40:
Alternative 1: Travel north on Jefferson Street, west on Avenue 39, south on Adams Street and back to Avenue 40.
Alternative 2: Travel south on Jefferson Street, northwest on Varner Road, north on Adams Street, and then head east on Avenue 40.
Detours available to eastbound drivers on Avenue 40:
Alternative 1: Travel north on Adams Street, east Avenue 39, and then south on Jefferson Street and finally back onto Avenue 40.
Alternative 2: Travel south on Adams Street, southeast on Varner Road, north on Jefferson Street, and then east on Avenue 40.
Access to addresses located between Adams Street and Andrews Court on Avenue 40 will not be affected by this road closure. Drivers can still follow the eastbound detour for heading east on Avenue 40.

About the project
The North Indio Regional Flood Control Project is a 2.5-mile long series of concrete flood control channels. They will connect with existing channels starting in Sun City Palm Desert and take flows from there through North Indio to channels in Sun City Shadow Hills and into the Coachella Valley Stormwater Channel.
The largest in CVWD history, the $110,209,837 project has a projected completion date of summer 2024. Construction contractor is civil general engineering firm Sukut Construction, LLC.
When completed, the North Indio project will allow for construction and connection of other stormwater facilities that will provide regional flood protection to Thousand Palms and north Cathedral City.
Project benefits
- Protect homes and land in North Indio from regional flooding.
- Remove about 2,700 acres of land within North Indio from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's designated Special Flood Hazard Area.
- Eliminate the flood insurance requirement for area residents.
