It may soon be easier and quicker to claim baggage at the Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) because of a $5.7 million grant meant to speed up a renovation project.

PSP has been awarded a grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law-Airport Terminal Program, which will go toward the design and construction of an enlarged and revamped baggage claim system, according to a news release from PSP.

Originally, the project was on tap for 2025, but thanks to the grant, the airport is able to jump-start the project,  PSP said in an announcement last week.

“As air travel to our valley continues to grow, these funds will help us address the overcapacity issues we’re experiencing in our baggage claim," Executive Director of Aviation Harry Barrett said, according to the news release.

Barrett noted that the airport's overall effort to elevate the level of its services.

"The baggage claim project is just one of the many projects we are undertaking to address current issues with the terminal as part of our efforts to create a world-class airport for Palm Springs," he added.

This project goes above and beyond making sure it's not a hassle to recover baggage after a flight.

The building footprint will expand to make passenger circulation areas roomier, with new baggage return systems also built to accommodate more travelers. The work also features new flooring and an overhaul of certain infrastructure, ranging from electrical to HVAC systems.

In addition, passengers can anticipate the relocation of car rental service desks and some airline baggage service offices, as well as updates to the public announcement, bag information display and security systems. All this is designed to make their experience with PSP one they'd like to repeat.
