Ahead of the March 22 lease expiration, the Coachella Valley Water District has agreed to renew Riverside County’s lease at Lake Cahuilla for an additional year.
Supervisor V. Manuel Perez thanks the Coachella Valley Water District for the lease extension, which allows the county park district to continue operating the Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park in La Quinta while the county and the water district work together to find a longer-term resolution.
“This park is part of our history, part of our culture and part of the fabric of the Coachella Valley and the County of Riverside,” said Supervisor Perez. “This agreement gives us another year to work towards a long-term agreement to keep this important asset to many families and community members open.”
Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park is operated by the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District via a lease with the Coachella Valley Water District and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. In 2021, the original 50-year lease was set to expire. The lease agreement has been renewed every year for one-year terms, as the county and water district work on solutions to protect the waterbody from quagga mussels and ultimately pursue a long-term agreement.
