Walter Clark Legal Group's "Safe Ride Home Program" will be back in action for major holidays this year.
The program aims to discourage drunken driving by offering to reimburse anyone who pays for a cab, Uber or Lyft ride home during Fourth of July weekend, which runs July 1-July 4.
"If you see somebody who doesn't look like they should be driving, we'll pay for the ride," Walter Clark, founder of the Walter Clark Legal Group, said in a news release.
Clark acknowledged that because of the deceptive power of alcohol, many people unknowingly have gotten behind the wheel in an impaired state.
"I have and just about everybody I know has at some time driven when they shouldn't, and the reason that happens is that after you have a drink, you think you're fine. That's the effect of impairment. If you see somebody who doesn't look like they should be driving, we'll pay for the ride," he said.
The offer is available to those who register for a reimbursement coupon on Eventbrite via this link. Coachella Valley cities qualify for the program, as well as Victorville, El Centro, Banning, Yucca Valley and Morongo Valley. Some stipulations are that the ride must originate at a bar, restaurant or home and involve a trek of no more than 50 miles.
To qualify for the program, participants also must show a valid driver's license, be of legal drinking age and present a ride receipt with the reimbursement form. Payment for the ride does not come immediately but is provided via a check sent to the participant's home once the event concludes.
The Safe Ride Home Program also will combat drunken driving during Labor Day weekend, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's weekends.
"Walter Clark Legal Group wants everyone to celebrate the holidays safely and avoid drunk driving," the legal group said in a blog. "Drunk drivers are responsible for keeping roads safe, including taking a cab home instead of driving drunk."
