Palm Springs has chosen Westminster Kennel Club "Best in Show" winner Buddy Holly as the first-ever "Canine Mayor" of the city. As Canine Mayor, Buddy, described as a people lover, will be making appearances all across the city while serving as an ambassador for Palm Springs, according to a press release.

"As 'Canine Mayor' of Palm Springs, Buddy Holly looks forward to making many appearances around town as an ambassador for beautiful Palm Springs, California, while at the same time educating residents and visitors about his special breed — and along the way spreading smiles, laughter and joy!" the press release from the city said.

Mayor Grace Garner expected to swear in Buddy Holly at the Palm Springs City Council meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 10. There will be proclamations presented by the city and Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, according to the release.

Buddy's agenda will be packed with opportunities to teach about his breed.

According to the press release, "Buddy and his mom Janice are excited to partner with the City of Palm Springs to attend ribbon-cuttings, Walk of Stars ceremonies — and a few surprises along the way!"

Buddy Holly, a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen hound, aged 6, was born in the United Kingdom, the city said. He participated in dog shows in the UK, Ireland and Australia before arriving in the United States in November 2022. Buddy then launched his busy show career in the Coachella Valley, joining his owner, Janice Haynes, on trips to Portland, Oregon, as well as various sites in California, Arizona and Texas.

With the esteemed title of "Best in Show" winner bestowed upon him at the 147th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York, Buddy Holly has retired and is back in Palm Springs with Janice. They are looking forward to this new role in the community.
