The Coachella Valley Repertory (CVRep) has announced auditions for a new production it will stage this fall, according to a news release, and it is encouraging young adults to come to open auditions and try out for a role in the play, a spin on a classic play.

CVRep’s “Youth Outreach Program” is hosting auditions for “OPHELIA LIVES!,” and according to the news release, producers are auditioning high school-aged actors and actresses from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 at 68510 East Palm Canyon Drive in Cathedral City.

“CVRep’s Youth Outreach Programs offers classes to young actors, such as the craft of acting,” Howard Shangraw, director of the CVRep Conservatory and Community Outreach Programs, said in a news release. “These are taught by theatre professionals who encourage students to let their imaginations soar. Our Youth Outreach productions have been seen by nearly 14,000 students. “

“OPHELIA LIVES!,” written by award-winning playwright Gillette Elvgren, puts a new spin on Shakespeare’s "Hamlet" as the characters portray members of a drama club that analyze the characters of the classic play as the come to terms with their own struggles, according to the news release. Shangraw also noted in the release that the play relies on honesty to delve into sensitive issues that teens face.

“For many in the audience, these were their first experience with live, professionally staged performances,” he added in the news release.

The production, according to the news release, calls for two female and three male cast members, with each preparing a short monologue for the production.

As part of the production, the actors selected will have an opportunity to work with a professional crew, from directors to designers. Performances, set for September, and transportation to and from performances to the school will be covered by the repertory.

Tickets will be $10 and can be purchased online at cvrep.org or by calling the CVRep box office at (760) 296-2966.
