U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) has joined in endorsing a military construction and Veterans Affairs appropriations bill that promises growth at the March Air Reserve Base. Calvert contributed to the measure's recent passage in the House with a majority vote of 219 to 211.
The “Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations” bill for fiscal year 2024 includes funding for the “March Air Reserve Base” (March ARB), Calvert said in a press release on the day of the bill's passage July 27. He cited over $225 million targeted for projects on the base aimed at preparing for new “KC-46A tankers”.
“After fighting to have the next generation of air tankers based at March ARB, I’m leading the way to ensure our Riverside County installation has the necessary upgrades to support these vital aircraft,” Calvert said. “The investment of more than $225 million at March ARB is a clear indication that our region will continue to play an integral role in our national security."
He sees the funding as critical considering tensions between China and the United States.
"As our defense priorities shift to reflect a rising China, we must continue to upgrade the capabilities of our West Coast military installations, which is why I’m also pleased to see $42 million included for enhancements at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms," Calvert said in the release.
The release mentions the specific projects that will be funded, including of the construction of an aircraft hangar and training facilities for aircraft operating crews. Additionally, a communication tower will be built at “Twentynine Palms”.
The bill also gives significant funding to Veterans Affairs, according to Calvert's release, which puts the figure at $299 billion.
Calvert, a lifelong resident of Riverside County, serves the 42nd congressional district. Additionally, he has worked as a restaurant and real-estate entrepreneur for almost two decades, according to his biography. Calvert is known to give back to the community beyond his role in Congress by serving community volunteer groups, such as the Corona Chamber of Commerce, the Corona Rotary and the Corona-Norco Family YMCA.
