Assembly member Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) has announced that 2024 will be his final year in the California State Assembly. The following year will mark a decade since he assumed the role of representative for the 36th Assembly District.
In a statement, Garcia reflected on the personal sacrifices made during his tenure, "I can’t count the number of basketball games and back-to-school nights I’ve missed in this vocation. My daughter would be ready to enter her teens if I stayed for the full duration of the Legislature’s term limits. Ultimately, I want to be present for more of these precious moments with them." Despite stepping down from his position, Garcia reaffirmed his commitment to public service: "Public service remains a passion of mine, and I will always seek opportunities to serve my community and apply my experience to make a difference in people’s lives as I transition to this next chapter."
According to a statement issued alongside Garcia's announcement, he shared that his son was 10 years old and his daughter was an infant when he took his oath of office. Today, he describes his son as "a talented, creative young adult" and his daughter as a "smart, charismatic nine-year-old." However, due to ten years of commuting four days a week to Sacramento for public service duties, he admits missing much of their growth.
Garcia's assemblymember website reveals that he currently presides as chair of the Assembly Committee on Utilities and Energy. This committee oversees issues related to energy stability, affordability and safety along with state efforts aimed at decarbonizing its electrical grid. Additionally, Garcia serves on several other committees including Budget Subcommittee 3, Communications and Conveyance, Governmental Organization, and Human Services.
In another part of Garcia's statement, he expressed pride in what he has achieved on behalf of his constituents. He said part of his legacy will involve directing hundreds of millions of dollars towards district projects such as the Salton Sea, the New River, new parks, affordable housing, and vital infrastructure. Garcia also emphasized his work in increasing access to medical care and addressing air and water quality issues.
