The City of Desert Hot Springs has received a generous donation from the Humane Society of the Desert: an Animal Hospital and Animal Sanctuary. This contribution will enable the city to enhance its animal care services.
In a press release issued by the City of Desert Hot Springs, it was stated that the gifted properties would allow for an expansion in animal care and control capacity at the Animal Sanctuary site. Additionally, they will be able to offer veterinary care services at the Animal Hospital site through a contracted provider. The planned services include medical and rehabilitative care, emergency services, routine check-ups, and spay and neuter clinics.
The press release further elaborated on the city's intention to leverage this expansion to foster community engagement. They aim to raise awareness about animal welfare and encourage volunteerism and other forms of support from community members.
According to the same press release, Desert Hot Springs is set to officially commence operations at the Animal Sanctuary on January 2, 2024. The city has already initiated a Request for Information for operating the Animal Hospital services, which closes on December 21, 2023.
"This is a momentous occasion for Desert Hot Springs. By expanding our Animal Care and Control facilities and services, we are exhibiting our commitment to the welfare of all animals in our community. This initiative will not only provide increased capacity for Animal Care and Control but pave the way for an operator to come in and provide much needed veterinary services at the Animal Hospital for our community," said Mayor Scott Matas in his statement included in the press release.
A Facebook post announcing this donation revealed that any delinquent property taxes owed on both properties would be resolved by the city. This action was necessary to facilitate the transfer of these properties.
