The Transgender Health & Wellness Center (TH&WC) has announced the inauguration of a Marsha P. Johnson LGBTQ+ Youth Drop-In Center (MPJ) in Palm Springs, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for January 21.

According to a press release by TH&WC, the MPJ Drop-In Center is designed to be a safe haven and resource for LGBTQ youth aged between 13 and 18. The center aims to assist those who have been victims of transphobic or homophobic abuse at home or school, as well as those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The press release further outlines that the MPJ Drop-In Center will provide an array of services. These include crisis counseling and intervention, connection to a free mental health program named "Healing Rainbows," LGBTQ family support groups, healthcare facilities, food pantry, game room, social events among others. Punzalan, the director of outreach, said in the press release that the center "will be a true desert oasis for those seeking a chill place to be."

The TH&WC press release also highlights the disproportionate levels of poverty and violence experienced by transgender individuals, with transgender youth being especially vulnerable. It was stated that one in two transgender youths experience sexual violence and/or police violence while one in three attempt suicide. Safe spaces like the MPJ Drop-In Center can potentially help reduce these alarming statistics.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, according to TH&WC's press release, recognition will be given to Palm Springs’ "Front Runners & Walkers," who donated $10,000 to the MPJ Drop-In Center. Coachella Valley media outlets along with community members are expected to attend this event.

As per TH&WC's press release, the MPJ Drop-In Center is situated at 340 S. Farrel Drive, Suite A106 in Palm Springs and will operate on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
