On May 3, 2024, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office issued a reminder for the public to celebrate Cinco de Mayo responsibly by planning ahead and designating a sober driver. Lieutenant Rick Espinoza emphasized the importance of responsible behavior, stating, "Don’t put yourself and others on the road at risk by driving impaired."

The Sheriff’s Office highlighted that alcohol is not the only substance that can impair driving. They cautioned that marijuana, prescription medications, or over-the-counter drugs can also affect one's ability to drive safely. They advised individuals to research and understand how different substances may impact their driving capabilities.

It was noted that the funding for this initiative is supported by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. For media inquiries related to this campaign, the public is encouraged to reach out to the Media Information Bureau.
