Brennan Sonne, a 37-year-old native of Maple Ridge, B.C., has joined the Firebirds as an assistant coach. His new role is seen as a homecoming after being hired by head coach Derek Laxdal in mid-July. Sonne's coaching career spans multiple continents, and he values the experiences gained from living in different cultures.

“It’s been six country moves over the last 11 or 12 years,” Sonne stated. “But, I think it’s all been invaluable; the personal growth and experiences."

Sonne spent time coaching in Hong Kong and France before returning to Canada to lead the Saskatoon Blades in the WHL. During his tenure with the Blades, he achieved a record of 136-54-14 and led them to three postseason appearances.

Reflecting on his busy schedule last season, Sonne said, “Even though my Blades’ team was the best in the league and we won that U-17 gold medal, I mean, I’d never felt lower.” The time away from his family prompted him to seek more balance between work and personal life.

The opportunity with the Firebirds allows Sonne to be closer to family. His wife's parents have a home in Desert Hot Springs, where they frequently visit during Christmas. “My wife’s parents have had a place in Desert Hot Springs for a number of years,” Sonne explained.

His connection to the area has grown since then. “Oh, yeah. My in-laws go to games; people in their neighborhood are season ticket holders,” he added.

Sonne appreciates the climate change from Saskatoon's harsh winters to playing golf in December in Desert Hot Springs. He recalls trying unsuccessfully to get Firebirds tickets two years ago during one of his visits.

Combining professional aspirations with family proximity is important for Sonne. “As a family, it’s almost like a dream,” he remarked. Being near grandparents offers rare support for someone in his profession.

“As a dad, my top priority is being a dad – and it always will be," Sonne emphasized about balancing his career with family life.

As he settles into his new role with the Firebirds' third season underway, Sonne looks forward to having family support at games while maintaining focus on both professional and personal responsibilities.

“My wife will come to games, and one grandparent at a time,” he concluded about managing family attendance at matches while ensuring care for their daughter remains consistent.
