Cathedral City Fire & EMS has announced a new traffic safety initiative focused on reducing fatalities and injuries, particularly among young children. This effort is supported by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and aligns with the department's commitment to community safety.
The program aims to decrease traffic-related fatalities in Cathedral City, reduce injuries from crashes through education and outreach, protect vehicle occupants under eight years old, and increase proper child safety seat usage.
Key components include participation in National Child Passenger Safety Week and National Heatstroke Prevention Day to raise awareness about vehicle safety for children. The department will also conduct community-based child safety seat checkups at various locations throughout the year. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs) will educate caregivers on correct installation, check for recalls, and provide resources.
Staff training as CPSTs will ensure consistent support for families. Special efforts will target low-income communities to provide essential knowledge about child safety seats. The department plans to engage in traffic safety fairs and events citywide to promote overall traffic and child safety.
Free distribution of OTS-funded child safety seats will occur alongside educational initiatives for families in need. Quarterly meetings with stakeholders across the county aim to share best practices in child passenger safety.
Ongoing training sessions for law enforcement and first responders will focus on occupant protection, including one-on-one child safety seat inspections available by appointment with NHTSA-certified technicians.
Chief Michael Contreras emphasized the initiative's significance: “The safety of our community, especially our children, is our top priority. This program will not only help save lives but also ensure that families have the resources and education they need to keep their children safe on the road.”
