As the Firebirds embark on their third season, coaches Stu Bickel and Collin Zulianello continue to play pivotal roles in mentoring both new and experienced players. The team aims to replicate the postseason successes of its predecessors from 2023 and 2024.
Stu Bickel, a Minnesota native with experience in both the AHL and NHL, has been instrumental in balancing player development with winning games. "Having a bit younger group poses some different challenges for us as a staff," Bickel stated. He emphasized the importance of focusing on player development while maintaining a winning culture, noting that "the wins – it’s a big part of the development process."
Bickel's influence is evident in the team's strong defensive and Penalty Kill units. Under his guidance, players like Ryker Evans and Ty Nelson have shown significant growth. The Firebirds' Penalty Kill unit ranked 7th in 2023, 11th last year, and currently holds 6th place in the AHL this season.
Reflecting on his tenure with the Firebirds, Bickel praised previous head coach Dan Bylsma for establishing a strong culture within the team. "From Day One, Dan did a great job implementing a culture and a standard here," he said. This foundation has continued under current coach Laxdal's leadership.
Bickel highlighted how success attracts talent: "When you’re in free agency...you look at NHL opportunities." For veterans considering their options in the American League, joining a winning team like the Firebirds can be an appealing choice.
As roster changes occur in their third year, Bickel remains committed to consistency and helping players adapt to their environment. His approach has helped many Firebirds secure opportunities with Seattle's NHL team.
Bickel expressed excitement for players who advance to higher levels: "Anytime a player goes up, I’m always pumped for them." He encourages them to make it difficult for teams to send them back down.
Living in Palm Desert has also had its perks for Bickel. He appreciates community support: "I really enjoy this community...it’s incredible." Although adjusting to desert summers was challenging—"Living down here in July is an entirely different animal"—he finds solace hiking local trails during off-seasons.
Bickel enjoys exploring nature outside of hockey commitments: "It’s definitely one of the perks about being out here...unplug from hockey...enjoying a few hours on a hike."
