Significant progress by Cathedral City’s Public Works Department will allow Vista Chino between Date Palm Drive and Avenida Maravilla to reopen to drivers starting Wednesday, Aug. 30, the city said on its Discover Cathedral City website.

“Throughout the past week, the response to cleanup efforts by volunteers, businesses, and community groups has been impressive and has led to substantial progress,” the post on the city website said.

The exact time of the road’s reopening will be relayed through the city’s social media platforms and official website. The city said it plans to reopen Los Gatos Road, spanning from Date Palm Drive to Avenida La Vista, by the end of this week or the beginning of next week.

“In addition to assistance from the Salvation Army, Team Rubicon has extended its dedicated cleanup efforts, spanning several additional days and encompassing the weekend, the city said. Further contributing to the cause, FIND Food Bank organized a mobile market at Agua Caliente Elementary School on Friday, August 25, 2023. Also, Trio restaurant collaborated with volunteers from World Central Kitchen to provide meals for 250 individuals in Cathedral City, the city posting said.

Volunteers seeking to contribute to the cleanup activities on private property along Horizon Road must have access to specific home driveways and are advised against parking on the street, the post said. Given the current heat wave, residents should dress appropriately for high temperatures, carry an ample supply of water, and apply sunscreen. Gloves, shovels, and wheelbarrows are also essential if available, the post said.

Riverside County said Tropical Storm Hilary has caused damage to roadways and bridges totaling $82,772,375 across the county. The overall estimated damages in the county exceed $126 million; this figure is subject to change as additional damages are reported to the county, the county government reported.
