A weapons investigation by the Coachella Community Action Team (CCAT) resulted in the confiscation of multiple ghost guns on Thursday.
Other illegal weapons were also found in a Thermal home and 31-year-old Miguel Torres was arrested, according to a press release from the Riverside County sheriff's office.
The sheriff's SWAT team and the Southern Coachella Valley Community Service District Team joined CCAT to execute a search warrant on Thursday in the 60-400 block of Jackson Street, the press release noted.
"The search warrant was the culmination of a weapons investigation CCAT was conducting, which resulted in the arrest of ... Torres," Sgt. Mariano Matos III said in the press release.
The search yielded 12 firearms, gun parts, jigs used to manufacture firearms, high-capacity magazines, and a large stash of ammunition, according to the press release. Although Matos did not cite a specific number, he said that multiple firearms turned out to be ghost guns, which lack the serial number that identifies the weapon.
Following the discovery of the guns, parts, and tools, officers arrested Torres, a resident of Thermal, Matos said. Torres was charged with manufacturing firearms and possession of the following: multiple rifles non-compliant with California law, a short-barreled rifle, multiple non-serialized firearms (commonly referred to as ghost guns), multiple high-capacity magazines, and a firearm with a threaded barrel.
Torres was booked at the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio, the press release noted.
