Homicide investigators have identified a suspect in the death of an inmate at Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Shortly after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to the detention center on a report of an unresponsive male and worked with medical staff to render aid. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, Deputy Sgt. Richard Carroll said on behalf of the Sheriff's Department.
As a result of the injuries observed on the deceased, deputies secured the area and launched an investigation.
"The investigation revealed that the decedent died after an altercation with another inmate," Carroll said, reporting that the Corrections Intelligence Bureau and Central Homicide Unit both handled the case.
After notification of the victim's family, Carroll recently identified the deceased as 41-year-old Kaushal Niroula. According to his report, Niroula was involved in an "altercation" with 61-year-old Rodney Sanchez prior to Niroula's death.
Sanchez has since been identified as the suspect in the case, and he faces homicide charges, Carroll said. The report does not shed any light on the reason for the altercation between the inmates.
To aid in this ongoing investigation, anyone who may have information regarding the incident is asked to contact Central Homicide Investigator Adams at 951-955-2777. There are no additional details at this time, according to the Riverside Sheriff's Department.
