The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating a double hit-and-run in the City of Coachella that resulted in the death of a 50-year-old male pedestrian.
"The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was struck by two separate vehicles moments apart, both of whom fled the scene without stopping," Sgt. Steven Rivera said in a news release.
Responding to a report of a major injury collision involving a pedestrian, Thermal Station deputies found a Hispanic man lying unresponsive at the intersection of Cesar Chavez and Cairo streets at 10:24 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30.
According to Rivera, paramedics arrived on scene and performed lifesaving measures, but the man succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
The pedestrian's name will not be released pending further investigation and the notification of family members, the release said.
An investigation has been assumed by the Coachella traffic team, which also arrived at the scene. At the time of this release, the cause of the collision hasn't been determined, but the investigation remains active.
To assist in finding those responsible for the fatality, investigators are asking anyone who may have information to come forward, especially any witnesses who have not been interviewed. Such individuals are encouraged to call Deputy Nevins of Thermal Station at 760-863-8990.
