A Moreno Valley man has been charged with two counts of murder after a head-on collision Sunday that killed a Riverside County correctional corporal and his 19-year-old daughter Hannah, both of San Jacinto.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department's initial investigation revealed that the 47-year-old Moreno man driving the other vehicle was under the influence of alcohol, according to a news release from the department.
Correctional Corporal Jacks, along with his 19-year-old daughter, Hannah, passed away Sunday, Nov. 13, 2022, approximately 9:17 p.m., as the result of an off-duty vehicle collision on Gilman Springs Road, east of Bridge Street in the unincorporated area of Hemet, the release said.
The California Highway Patrol, which responded to the collision, took the lead on the investigation.
"We are saddened to announce the death of Correctional Corporal Daniel Jacks, most recently assigned to the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio," Sgt. Vickers said in the release.
According to the Sheriff's Department, Jacks started his service with the department on Sept. 2, 2008, and after graduating from the academy, he was assigned to the Indio jail. He briefly served at the Palm Desert Station in May of 2014, but soon returned to the Indio jail after being transferred the following year. Correctional Corporal Jacks was promoted to his current rank in March of 2022 and most recently was assigned to the John Benoit Detention Center.
Jacks is survived by his wife Denay; son Brent; father Daniel Sr.; and brothers Anthony and Tommy.
As a result of an investigation, California Highway Patrol Officer Jason Montez reported that the Moreno Valley suspect was arrested on suspicion for second-degree murder as well as for driving under the influence and reckless driving that caused the accident, KESQ reports. The article also said the suspect was seriously injured.
According to Officer Montez in the news report, the suspect was driving a Chevrolet Silverado with a front-seat passenger when he crossed the divided highway on Gilman Springs and collided head on with an eastbound Honda Insight driven by Jacks. This accident happened as the suspect's westbound vehicle reached a stretch of the two-lane corridor lacking a barrier for the center median. Only double yellow lines separated the vehicles and could not prevent this tragedy, as KESQ reports.
Jacks and his daughter were pronounced dead at the scene by Riverside County Fire Department paramedics.
According to KESQ, a fundraiser has been set up to support the Jacks family during their loss. Check out the following link for more information.
