The Palm Springs Police Department (PSPD) is investigating the cause of an accident that killed a pedestrian Thursday night at the intersection of Ramon and Crossley roads.

While drugs or alcohol are not seen as contributing factors, the cause of the accident remains under investigation, according to an incident report posted by PSPD on Facebook. Police also noted that the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian is cooperating with authorities as they look into the facts.

Multiple reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian are what drew PSPD officers to the intersection just before 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 4.

"When officers arrived, they found a man unresponsive, in the roadway," the Facebook post said.

It was too late for medical care, and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet named the pedestrian, who was described on social media only as a male.

The road was closed while the traffic team conducted its investigation, and it was reopened at approximately 2 a.m. Friday morning.

Several area residents have commented on Facebook about what some deem a dangerous intersection for pedestrians and an area associated with high speeds like a "racetrack." One individual said that the section of roadway is often congested with pedestrians even at night; there is a convenience store nearby that draws traffic as well. They also commented that it was a sad situation for all involved, and others extended their prayers.

In an interview with NBC Palm Springs, Palm Springs Police Lt. Mike Villegas said the driver was traveling eastbound on Ramon Road when he struck a pedestrian who was in the roadway.

During the interview, Villegas stressed the need for caution, especially with tourists flocking to town and homeless individuals also on the streets.

“I would recommend...people be very cautious and aware of their surroundings," he told NBC. "If a pedestrian decides to cross a major roadway, like Ramon Road...wait to get the right of way, you know, wait for the signal light to turn on and you have the right of way. As far as the drivers. I highly recommend taking a defensive approach, so constantly being aware of your surroundings."

Anyone who might have witnessed the accident or have details related to it is encouraged to contact the PSPD Traffic Division at 760-323-8125. Those who wish to remain anonymous can provide information on the crash to Valley Crime Stoppers at 760-347-7867.
