A father and son have been arrested in connection with the recent murder of a North Palm Springs man who died of multiple gunshots, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department (RCSD) reported.
A Friday RCSD press release named the suspects as 33-year-old Cody Barneck and 66-year-old Mark Barneck, who both live in North Palm Springs, the same town as the victim.
"The victim in this homicide investigation has been identified as Jeremy M. Abshear, 48-year-old resident of North Palm Springs," RCSD Sgt. Ed Baeza said in his report.
In addition to the suspects, Palm Desert Patch noted that a teenager was also arrested in connection with the murder and has been identified as 19-year-old Aisa Kirk Bailey. Court records indicated that all three suspects have been additionally charged with discharging a firearm causing significant bodily harm. Cody Barneck faces another felony count for being a convicted felon and narcotic addict in possession of a firearm. His sentence could be further enhanced by the allegation of using a firearm during a murder.
The Barnecks each pleaded not guilty during their arraignment Friday afternoon at Indio's Larson Justice Center, an NBC Palm Springs report said.
The arrests occurred just days after the May 16 shooting that resulted in Abshear being pronounced dead at the scene on the 64000 block of 16th Avenue in North Palm Springs, the press release said. Deputies from the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to the scene at 5:04 a.m. and found Abshear suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of the deputies and paramedics, the victim succumbed to his injuries.
The Sheriff's Department has asked for help from the community as it continues its investigation. Those with information related to the case are encouraged to call Master Investigator J. Manjarrez of the Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-2777 or Investigator Lugo of the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station at 760-836-1600.
