The Board of Directors of the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) has unanimously agreed to expand financial assistance to more customers through their Residential Energy Assistance Program (REAP). The decision comes as the district aims to provide relief to residents facing financial hardships in paying their electric bills.

"Our commitment has always been to the well-being of our customers," said Alex Cardenas, IID Board President. "Recognizing the financial hardships many face, we've taken measures to extend our reach and support. Now, even more residents will find relief in their electric bills through our comprehensive assistance programs. This Board's united action today speaks volumes and our message is clear: We're here for you."

The IID has endorsed modifications to the eligibility criteria for the REAP program, enabling a broader range of customers to qualify. The updates include reducing the minimum age requirement for a 30 percent discount on electric bills for income-qualified customers from 62 to 60 years old. Additionally, eligible customers under the age of 60 can now receive a 20 percent discount through the same program.

Customers who are eligible for both the REAP and Emergency Energy Assistance Program (EEAP) can receive financial assistance of up to $400 annually if they are at risk of disconnection. The district is also offering reduced rates through the Medical Equipment Assistance Program (MEEAP) for REAP customers who rely on electric-powered medical equipment.

Currently, approximately 12,000 out of 160,000 metered accounts are enrolled in the REAP program. The program has available funds totaling $3.1 million as of early September. The EEAP program has $1.4 million in funds, while the MEEAP program has $62,000 available.

IID is urging customers who are facing difficulties with their electric bills to reach out to its Customer Service Center at 1-800-303-7756 for assistance. The district may be able to provide temporary payment deferrals, interest-free installment plans, or connect customers with other support programs. Customers can obtain a REAP application at any IID Customer Service Center or access it online through the district's official website.

"IID has dollars ready for customer relief now," said Vice President JB Hamby. "Let's not leave a cent unspent by year-end. The assistance is available now. Please get in touch with IID today and sign up."
