The Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) has recently introduced a new book vending machine at a local elementary school, as part of its initiative to encourage reading and reward good behavior among students. The machine, named Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine™, was unveiled at Valle Del Sol Elementary School on December 11.
According to a post on the CVUSD Facebook page, the vending machine dispenses books in exchange for golden tokens, which students can earn through demonstrating positive behavior. The district described this innovative approach as a "powerful combination of vending books and a reward system" that successfully "bridges the gap between literacy and engagement."
The same post revealed that the first students to use the vending machine were Adrian Nuñez from 6th grade, Celeste Corona from 2nd grade, and Armida Reyes from kindergarten. Additionally, the district recognized Jennifer Eyre, the school’s assistant principal, for her leadership in bringing this unique project to fruition. However, there was no mention of whether similar machines would be installed in other schools within the district.
Global Vending Group's website provides further information about Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine. According to their site, these customizable machines range in price from $5,300 to $6,300. Organizations that purchase them reportedly utilize various funding sources such as DonorsChoose, Education Foundation, United Way, Save the Children. Kiwanis Club, Boys and Girls Club along with regional literacy grants and Parent-Teacher Organizations/Associations (PTOs/PTAs).
According to data available on the CVUSD website, approximately 700 students are currently enrolled at Valle Del Sol Elementary School.
