The City Council of Palm Springs has given the green light for the use of nearly $9 million in Measure J funds for street paving projects. The decision, made at a recent City Council meeting, is set to bring about significant improvements to the city's infrastructure.
Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein, former Chair of the Measure J Commission, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This is fantastic news for our residents and neighborhoods. This is the most money ever allocated for annual street paving -- and it’s all thanks to Measure J, which continues to be a huge economic booster for the City of Palm Springs. Perhaps most importantly, this is money that primarily comes from tourist dollars and not our residents. It’s a win-win!”
City Manager Scott Stiles also shared his excitement for the initiative, saying, “The City of Palm Springs is delighted to begin this important project that will truly make a tangible difference in our neighborhoods. A big thank you to the residents of Palm Springs for voting to approve Measure J, which continues to bring in millions of dollars for capital and community improvement projects that are improving quality of life in Palm Springs for generations to come.”
The Measure J program, approved by Palm Springs voters in 2011, has been instrumental in funding various citywide services and capital improvement projects over the years. From the Downtown Revitalization Project to park improvements and street paving, Measure J has played a vital role in enhancing the city's infrastructure and amenities.
In the near future, Measure J funds will be allocated towards further improvements, including projects at Palm Springs International Airport, expansion of pickleball courts, playground equipment upgrades, new field lighting, and renovations of key city facilities.
