The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Perris Station, is set to hold a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint on May 3, 2024, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location in the City of Perris. The initiative aims to enhance public safety by targeting impaired drivers on the road.
Sergeant Jeremy Bracey emphasized the importance of such checkpoints, stating, "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk." He highlighted that reducing the number of impaired drivers can greatly improve overall traffic safety.
It is crucial to note that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol consumption. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and even marijuana can also impair driving abilities. Despite the legalization of marijuana for medicinal and recreational purposes, driving under its influence remains illegal.
Drivers caught under the influence face severe consequences, including fines averaging $13,500 and a suspended license for first-time DUI offenders. The funding for this DUI checkpoint program was made possible by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
