During Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is emphasizing the importance of road safety for motorcyclists and drivers alike. Sergeant Marcos Acosta from the Sheriff’s Office urges drivers to be vigilant, stating, "Motorcycles may be difficult to spot, so be extra careful before changing lanes." Acosta emphasizes the critical role of all road users in ensuring safety, adding, "Let’s all do our part to keep each other safe out there."

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, in 2022, 6,218 motorcyclists lost their lives in traffic accidents. Motorcyclists face significantly higher risks on the road, being 22 times more likely to die in a crash compared to passenger car occupants and four times more likely to be injured.

To promote safety, both drivers and motorcyclists are encouraged to adopt safe practices. Drivers are reminded to be alert and watch out for motorcyclists, while motorcyclists are advised to wear protective gear and ride defensively. Additionally, all road users are reminded to avoid distractions and never drive or ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Funding for this safety initiative is supported by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. For media inquiries related to this awareness campaign, the Media Information Bureau can be contacted.
