Calimesa, Calif. – The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is gearing up for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May, urging drivers to remain vigilant on the roads. Deputy Michael Hinkle emphasized the importance of being cautious around motorcycles, stating, "Motorcycles may be difficult to spot, so be extra careful before changing lanes." He added, "Motorcycle riders do not have the same protections drivers and passengers do. Let’s all do our part to keep each other safe out there."
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,218 motorcyclists lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2022. The statistics reveal that motorcyclists face significantly higher risks on the road compared to passenger car occupants.
In light of these concerning numbers, both drivers and motorcyclists are encouraged to prioritize safety by following a few key tips. Drivers are reminded to be extra cautious and watch out for motorcycles, while motorcyclists are advised to ride defensively and wear appropriate safety gear.
Additionally, it is emphasized that both drivers and riders should never operate a vehicle while distracted or under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
The Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month initiative is supported by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, administered through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
