Hospitality management students from California State University, San Bernardino's Palm Desert Campus have concluded a study abroad program in Italy. During their spring break, these students engaged with Italy's storied hospitality, culinary, and cultural sectors through a comprehensive program designed to offer real-world insights into the global hospitality industry.
The program, led by hospitality management program director Joe Tormey and faculty member Michelle Russen, enabled direct interaction with professionals in various sectors including wine, food products, retail, and tourism. Students visited cities like Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Modena, and Florence, participating in activities such as guided tours, culinary workshops, and cultural explorations.
"This study abroad trip was an incredible opportunity for our students to experience hospitality on a global stage," explained Tormey. He emphasized the connection between classroom learning and practical application, aiding students in gaining international perspectives.
Students like Zane Ramirez and Edith Alcala lauded the cultural and educational aspects of the trip. "I loved being immersed in Italian culture," Ramirez shared, describing the experience as both enriching and exciting. Alcala highlighted the Italian hospitality industry, noting it as an imperative personal experience.
The program included visits to the Florence University of the Arts, an affiliated partner school, and hands-on cooking classes at Florence's Central Market. The initiative is part of CSUSB's broader goal of empowering students through beyond-the-classroom learning experiences, cultivating global citizens and future leaders.
