A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for May 9 at the Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus to initiate the construction of a new Student Services Building. The event, beginning at 9:30 a.m., marks a significant step in expanding the campus and enhancing student support services.
The ceremony will be attended by university officials, local dignitaries, community partners, and campus supporters. An RSVP is requested from those planning to attend.
In 2022, the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus received $79 million from the state budget for Phase I of this project. This funding was partially secured through efforts by former California State Assemblymembers Eduardo Garcia and Chad Mayes. Unlike other campus buildings funded locally, this state investment highlights community advocacy for increased educational opportunities in Coachella Valley.
Upon completion, the 23,700-square-foot building will feature an advising/tutoring center, career center, expanded library space, group study areas, a cross-cultural center, bookstore, food services, health center, and recreation facilities. It aims to provide enhanced support services while freeing up approximately 10,000 square feet in existing campus buildings for academic program expansion.
“This groundbreaking is a reflection of our continued commitment to student success,” stated Tomás D. Morales, president of Cal State San Bernardino. “The new Student Services Building will serve as a hub for resources that empower students to thrive academically, socially and professionally.”
Edna Martinez from CSUSB echoed these sentiments: “This groundbreaking marks an exciting new chapter for our campus and the Coachella Valley. The Student Services Building is set to transform the student experience and strengthen our ability to attract and retain local talent.”
Designed to support up to 4,000 full-time equivalent students (FTE), the building will offer flexibility as enrollment grows at this central Coachella Valley location dedicated to providing transformative education.
