The Riverside County Sheriff's Office in Moreno Valley is urging the public to celebrate the Fourth of July responsibly. They recommend planning ahead by designating a sober driver, using public transportation, ride-sharing services, or calling a cab. From June 30 to July 6, additional deputies will be on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In 2023, there were 617 fatalities in crashes across the U.S. during the Fourth of July holiday period. Alcohol was involved in 38% of these deadly incidents. In California alone, 29 people lost their lives in crashes while over 1,300 arrests for driving under the influence were made by California Highway Patrol officers during last year's Independence Day holiday.
"Designating a sober driver is a simple choice that can save your life and the lives of others on the road," stated Sergeant Marcos Acosta. "Drunk driving is one hundred percent preventable. We’re asking everyone to think of your loved ones, friends and family before getting behind the wheel. Make a plan to get home safely."
The warning extends beyond alcohol consumption; prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances may also impair driving abilities. The Sheriff's Office advises letting someone who is sober drive if you plan to consume any such substances.
Funding for this initiative comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
