The Riverside County Sheriff's Office, Perris Station, has issued a reminder for the public to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday responsibly. The department advises individuals to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using public transportation or ride-sharing services, or calling a cab. From June 30 to July 6, additional officers will be on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
In 2023, there were 617 fatalities in crashes across the United States during the Fourth of July holiday period. Alcohol was involved in 38% of these incidents. In California alone, 29 people lost their lives in crashes, and California Highway Patrol officers made over 1,300 arrests for driving under the influence during last year's Independence Day holiday.
Sergeant Jeremy Bracey emphasized the importance of responsible choices: “Designating a sober driver is a simple choice that can save your life and the lives of others on the road,” he said. “Drunk driving is one hundred percent preventable. We’re asking everyone to think of your loved ones, friends and family before getting behind the wheel. Make a plan to get home safely.”
The warning extends beyond alcohol consumption; prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances may also impair driving ability. Individuals planning to consume such substances should ensure someone sober drives them.
This safety initiative is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
