Naomi Osaka, Paula Badosa, and Simona Halep are among the stars of the Women’s Tennis Association who will participate in the 2022 Eisenhower Cup at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
“We are thrilled that the Eisenhower Cup will return to serve as a kickoff to the BNP Paribas Open and raise funds for such a worthwhile cause,” Tommy Haas, BNP Paribas Open tournament director, told NBC of Palm Springs. “Tennis fans will get to see the brightest stars of the WTA Tour in action during this unique and fun event, and we thank all of these incredible players for their participation. What a perfect way to welcome everyone to another year in Tennis Paradise.”
The TieBreak Tens tournament uses a format that requires the competitors to play a first to 10 points, tie-break-style match. The singe-elimination tournament under the lights at Stadium 2 features eight players, the TV report said.
Defending champ Badosa is currently ranked sixth in the WTA. Halep, ranked 27th, is a former champ. Aryna Sabalenka, who holds the No. 3 spot, will also compete, according to bnpparibasopen.com.
The competition is the opening event for the BNP Paribas Open, which offers events through March 20. Tickets cost $25 and money raised from the event will be distributed to charities in the community. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will be taking part in the Open, according to the tournament website.
