A traffic collision in Palm Desert on Monday morning resulted in the death of a 29-year-old male motorcyclist who has not yet been identified.
"The cause of this collision is still under investigation, and it is unknown if alcohol may be a factor," Deputy Shaun Griffith said in a press release from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Prior to the arrival of Palm Desert station deputies, uninvolved drivers stopped to "assist and render aid" to the motorcyclist at the scene of the 8:05 a.m. accident, Griffith said.
Upon investigation, deputies determined that the "major injury traffic collision" in the area of Washington Street and Tucson Circle involved a 2022 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, leaving a 29-year-old man lying in the road with extensive injuries.
The man did not survive his injuries despite wearing a helmet, being declared dead at the scene by deputies. The driver of the Jeep was transported with minor injuries.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the motorcyclist was traveling southbound on Washington Street at a "moderate rate of speed" when the Jeep Cherokee pulled into the intersection at Tucson Circle, the press release said. The motorcyclist collided with the Jeep and was thrown from the bike.
