Children aren't the only ones who will gain from the improvements heading for Cathedral City's Ocotillo Park and Soccer Park Fitness Track this coming spring.

The Cathedral City Council recently approved a comprehensive overhaul of both recreation areas, including a variety of fitness equipment, estimated to cost a total of $220,000.

As part of this project, the council gave the green light to the purchase and installation of new soft surfacing for around the Ocotillo Park play equipment and "tot lot" as well as new fitness equipment for both the Soccer Park Fitness Tract and Ocotillo, according to a news release by Cathedral City Communications & Events Manager Ryan Hunt.

Built in 2016, Ocotillo Park is located on Moreno Road in the newly named Ocotillo Square Neighborhood.

“Improving the quality of Cathedral City’s outside spaces remains a top priority for the City Council and our staff," Environmental Conservation and Public Works Manager Deanna Pressgrove said in the release. "These timely renovations and replacements at Ocotillo Park and the Soccer Park will ensure that our residents and visitors can continue to enjoy these amenities for years to come.”

This eco-friendly project derives a portion of the new surfacing from recycled tires while keeping within the same design and colors as today's surface. To make it happen, a slice of the renovation budget will go toward the removal of the existing surfacing and the cost of installing the new surfacing, according to the release.

As for new equipment, Ocotillo Park will welcome two units of outdoor fitness equipment, the article said. Meanwhile, Soccer Park Fitness Track will reap two new two-person accessible chest presses, two new two-person accessible lat pulls, two four-person leg presses and a set of three plyometric steps.

Topping off the work is a general sprucing up of the Soccer Park to include repainting, making minor repairs, cleaning the surface around the fitness equipment and taming overgrown turf along the walking path.

Look for these renovations to take place in the spring based on the time it takes for equipment delivery and new surface installation, the release said.
