PALM SPRINGS, CA – Thursday, June 6, 2024 – The Palm Springs Public Library will commence its 2024 Summer Reading program on Monday, June 10. This initiative is open to all age groups with tailored programs for children, teens, and adults. Registration can be completed online, and the six-week program includes weekly in-person events focusing on sustainability and resource stewardship under the theme "Read, Renew, Repeat." Additional activities include Preschool and Baby Story Times and Youth DIY crafts. A detailed schedule is available on the library’s calendar at pslibrary.org.

The Friends of the Palm Springs Library will provide free new books each week to participating children and teens. Participants need to check in weekly at the library to receive a voucher for a new book of their choice. Adults will receive vouchers for gently used books (valued up to $2) from the Friends of the Palm Springs Library bookstore.

In addition to free books, participants can enter weekly door prize drawings at in-person events, with prizes donated by local merchants and organizations. Grand prizes are also available through the support of the Palm Springs Sustainability Commission and the Friends of the Palm Springs Library. Participants earn tickets by checking in weekly and completing reading goals, with up to 12 tickets possible per participant. Grand prizes include eight bikes with helmets and locks, an electric scooter from the Palm Springs Sustainability Commission, a Nintendo Switch, a PlayStation 5, a $100 Amazon gift card, among others.

Jeannie Kays, Library Director stated: “It’s another great year full of wonderful in-person programs and free books. Summer Reading helps combat reading loss sometimes experienced over the summer; studies indicate that students who read recreationally outperform those who do not. We know that students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests.” Online registration begins Monday, June 10 at palmspringsca.beanstack.org.
